A double bill of Kurt Weill's Mahagonny Songspiel and Daron Hagen's Vera of Las Vegas
This hour-long operatic fantasy by composer Daron Hagen and librettist Paul Muldoon is the capstone of "City of Sin," ... by the ever-venturesome West Edge Opera that opened with Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's superbly apt "Mahagonny Songspiel." that didn't dispel the sensation of fizzy excitement inspired by most of the performance.
With music director Jonathan Khuner leading a taut, jazzy little instrumental ensemble - Hagen reorchestrated "Vera" for the occasion to match Weill's tangy forces - and directors Elkhanah Pulitzer and Mark Streshinsky working deft theatrical wizardry within the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater, "City of Sin" is rarely less than entertaining. — Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle
Staging, by West Edge Artistic Director Mark Streshinsky and aided by Jeremy Knight’s amusingly literal video projections, mined Muldoon’s poetry for maximum humor, and the cast delved into their parts with considerable gusto. --San Francisco Classical Voice
